The college football season was flipped on its head the past week, and that has led to a mess of rankings from the AP poll voters. The biggest thing to note is the obvious SEC bias within these rankings.

Teams within the SEC are not punished for losing to each other, and it keeps teams ranked far higher than they should be. When teams outside the conference lose, voters are punishing them far too severely. Here’s how I would have voted in the AP poll this past week.

#1 Ohio State

It’s pretty simple with the Buckeyes. If you don’t have them as the number one team in the country, the rest of your rankings mean nothing. I’m running out of ways to describe how talented this defense is, so instead I’ll talk about Julian Sayin. He’s starting to get unleashed in this offense, and he might just be the best pocket passer in the country. If he continues to play at an elite level, good luck beating Ohio State.

#2 Indiana

Ohio State might be the best team in the country, but I don’t think there is a more well-coached team in the country than Indiana. Cignetti has an innate ability to take weaknesses in his football team and disguise them better than any other team. I’m not entirely sold on this Hoosier offensive front, but having a quarterback like Fernando Mendoza allows you to play quickly and decisively, hiding weaknesses they might have in the trenches.

#3 Texas A&M

Who would’ve guessed that Texas A&M would be the final undefeated team in the SEC? Mike Elko’s Aggies are very battle-tested, pulling out close game after close game this season. It doesn’t get any easier for them either. They’ll have three ranked games in their last five opportunities, and if they can go 4-1 in that stretch, a trip to Atlanta will be in their future.

#4 Miami

Can someone explain to me why this Miami team, one that’s been receiving first-place votes all season, dropped to No. 9 in the AP poll? I didn’t come away from this Louisville game thinking that Miami was bad; I more so thought they played the sloppiest game they will all season, and their previous resume still outshines the rest of the country. I’m not selling any stock in Miami and expect Carson Beck to play how he did in the first five weeks of the year.

#5 Alabama

The Alabama team that lost to Florida State is not the same Alabama team we’re seeing right now; however, that loss still happened! The score doesn’t fully show it, but Miami dominated FSU at their place, and the Tide were dominated there, albeit in a week-one game. Alabama is probably the best team in the SEC, but they still have the worst loss out of any of the one-loss teams in the top 10. I can’t put them above Miami just yet.

#6 Oregon

The Ducks are in a tricky position. Their schedule has a lot of opportunities to continue to stack wins, but nothing that will be too great for their resume. Fortunately for Oregon, they have a defense, especially up front, that I think they can beat anyone in the nation. If Dante Moore can play well against USC and Washington later in the year, then I will be fully bought back in on Oregon.

#7 Georgia

Kirby Smart and Ryan Day need to have a sit-down, where they talk about taking care of Michigan and Alabama once and for all. The Georgia we saw against Ole Miss wasn’t like a Georgia team we’ve seen at any point this year, specifically at receiver. Zachariah Branch is starting to look like the number one option for Georgia, and that completely changes how their offense runs. Speaking of running, Gunner Stockton showing he can win a game with his legs when he needs to, also gives me way more faith in Georgia. I’m almost all the way back on Georgia, let’s see how they barely sneak by Florida in their next game…

#8 Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin learned a valuable lesson this past week. When you have your foot on Kirby Smart’s throat, don’t let up. More importantly, Ole Miss’ inability to run the ball killed them in this one. The Rebels led by two scores at the end of the third quarter, and the following two times they touched the ball, they didn’t even try to run it once. Chambliss is so talented with his legs, and not using him more to keep the clock running was a massive mistake from Kiffin. The schedule is pretty light to close the year for Ole Miss, so they should hopefully still find themselves in the playoffs by year’s end.

#9 Georgia Tech

The last two spots in the top 10 go to the final undefeated Power Four teams in the country. I’m not high on either Georgia Tech or BYU, but at this point, if you haven’t lost, it’s gotta count for something. Both of these teams have pretty solid defenses, but Haynes King is the difference maker between these schools. If there’s one player in the country that you need 1 yard from with the game on the line, Haynes King would probably be my first pick.

#10 BYU

I have to apologize. Despite Bear Bachmeier looking very dumb in number 47, he is not the same player as his brother. Hank Bachmeier’s reign as the least trustworthy guy to bet on in the country has made me think less of Bear, when this dude is an absolute winner. Behind Bear and a sneaky excellent defense, could I still be disrespecting BYU too much? Their matchup against Texas Tech in a few weeks will be very telling, as I am still far higher on the Red Raiders to win the Big 12.
